This in person course will provide attendees with a level of knowledge demonstraiting competence to install SPM (if already electrical installations qualified to BS7671 18th edition) and or to Inspect and Test surge protection measures (SPDs) under the duty holder obligations of the Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR) The course is based on recognising and meeting these legislative obligations following the listed recommendations and requirements of BS7671, BSEN 62305 and other related BSi pulblications and relevent standards.

1. Design considerations for surge protection measures

2. Lightning protection systems

    How to identify a lightning protection system presence

    Lightning protection class levels ‘LPL’ and associated surge energy strength

    DSEAR and COMAH regulated sites

    Documentation held, test certs, design schematics, and OM manual information.

    Externally located equipment equipotential bonding to a lightning protection system

    Earth bonding to the main electrical bonding bar

3. Surge protection system identification

    Locations required.

    Type identification

    Class strength identification

    Configuration identification

    DC PV protection and EV charge points in publicly accessible places

    Non mains voltage conductive lines – TV/RF/ CCTV/Signal and control

    Withstand of equipment (Uw), Let through Voltage (Up)

4. Installation of SPDs, disconnector, and backup OCPD identification

    Selection of SPD for the application and location

    Prevention of loss of life

    Sensitive electrical and electronic systems and critical systems within buildings

    Correct selection of switched disconnector or OCPDs

    Disconnector types and configurations

    Line routing and length connecting leads from SPD

    Withstand capability of fixed equipment and appropriate protection measures in respect to length of circuit

5. Commissioning / completion documentation

    Safe isolation for inspection

    Visual inspection of SPD, wiring, fuse, or breaker rating condition etc

    Identifying the correct type of SPD has been installed in consideration to LPS presence or not, External circuit lines, and Sensitive or ….critical system presence.

 …EICR Inspection records and functional testing of SPDs; recording results using ProSCT component tester.

6. Course duration and outcomes

    This is a Two day 14Hour course ending with a 30 question multiple-choice exam with pass mark of 28 correct answers.The results ….from which will determine whether the attendee has gained sufficient knowledge at a skill level to be awarded an accredited ,,,,certificate of competence for SPM selection, SPD configuration, inspection / testing and if the attendee has an appropriate electrical ….qualification, installation of SPM.
